GWI Statement to ECOSOC

GWI Statement to ECOSOC

May 2011 – The statement to ECOSOC on Breaking the Gendered Barriers to Secondary Education follows on the statement made to CSW. It was drafted by IFUW President Marianne Haslgrave and will be presented in July at the occasion of ECOSOC High-Level Segment.

“To ensure equal access to quality education for girls, particularly at the secondary level, strategies must be introduced to overcome the barriers. These include financial incentives, reducing distances to schools, recruiting qualified female teachers, eliminating gender bias from textbooks and teaching, creating safer school environments, providing better hygienic facilities, and organizing counselling and mentoring schemes.”
